The Hotel Housekeeping Checklist Used by Top Nairobi Hotels (Steal It)
May 20256 min readBiozone Kenya
A guest checks in at 3 PM and within five minutes they have decided whether they will come back, leave a five-star review, or complain. That decision happens before they touch the bed. It happens when they walk through the door and smell the room.
Why most hotel rooms fail the smell test
Most housekeeping teams in Kenya clean in the same order: strip the bed, wipe surfaces, mop the floor, done. The problem is that mopping last pushes dirty water under the furniture and the floor dries smelling like wet cloth.
The right order is: disinfect hard surfaces and the bathroom first, mop second, change linen last. The room should dry smelling like nothing at all. Guests read a clean smell as quality.
The full checklist, in the right order
Step 1: Ventilate before you touch anything
Open windows and the bathroom door for 5 minutes before you start cleaning. This removes the stale air from the previous guest and lets the room breathe while you work.
Step 2: Bathroom first
Apply Bio-rol Disinfectant undiluted to the toilet bowl, inside and under the rim. Leave it while you clean the rest of the bathroom.
Spray Bio-rol diluted 1:10 on the sink, taps, shower walls and floor tiles.
Wipe all surfaces with a clean cloth. Scrub tiles with a brush if there is limescale build-up.
Flush the toilet. Wipe the seat, lid and outside of the bowl.
Mop the bathroom floor last. Do not share the bathroom mop with the bedroom.
Pro tip: Keep separate mops and cloths for the bathroom and the bedroom. Cross-contamination is the most common reason hotel rooms fail hygiene inspections in Kenya.
Step 3: Hard surfaces in the bedroom
Wipe the TV remote, phone, door handles and light switches with Bio-rol on a cloth. These are the surfaces guests touch most and clean teams miss most.
Wipe desk, bedside tables and chair surfaces with Multi-Purpose Detergent diluted 1:10.
Check under the bed and behind the furniture for items left by previous guests.

Bio-rol Disinfectant 20L at KES 4,150. Multi-Purpose Detergent 20L at KES 1,450. We deliver to hotels across Kenya.
Vacuum or sweep before mopping. Never mop over dust.
Mop with Multi-Purpose Detergent diluted 1:15 in clean water. Change the water halfway through the room if the floor is large.
For carpeted rooms, spot-treat any stains with Carpet Cleaner Shampoo before the guests arrive, not after they have checked out and the stain has set.
Step 5: Linen last
Make the bed after the floor is clean. Never before.
Check pillowcases and the duvet cover at the corners and along the seams. Guests check these.
Wash linen with Laundry Detergent at the full recommended dose. Under-dosing is the reason hotel linen looks grey after six months.
What products to buy and how much
A 50-room hotel running at 70% occupancy needs approximately: one 20L Bio-rol Disinfectant per week, one 20L Multi-Purpose Detergent per week, and one 20L Laundry Detergent every 4 to 5 days. Buying in bulk with Biozone means you lock in the price and avoid running out mid-week.
